This session concentrates on the feelings and family issues that surround and often overwhelm family caregivers. Discussions include the following as cornerstones to maintaining an effective quality of life.

Establishing a Caregiver Network

This session discusses the importance of using traditional and new media options to enhance the support system for caregivers. Participants learn the practical aspects of establishing networks, the role of the coordinator/facilitator and creative ways to introduce proven topics of interest.

General Workshops

Caregiving

Designed for individuals who are new or experienced caregivers: In this session individuals will learn:

  • When caregiving begins
  • Sorting through the mix of resources
  • Managing expectations
  • Getting important matters and papers organized
  • Understanding that caregiving is only one of many of an individual’s roles and responsibilities.

 

FUNctional Stress Management

This session is a gift to everyone.

  • How to relieve caregiver stress through play, laughter, highly classified secrets and just plain fun
  • Take care of yourself and leave with stress reduction techniques that can be practiced at home or work.

 

How to Find and Access Community Resources

Explore the wealth of community resources that are available in most locales, as well as, learn to maneuver through the bureaucracy. Participant “dilemmas” will be used as case studies for demonstration.

 

Improving Communications with an Elderly Loved One

In this session, participants will learn about communication issues and techniques across the continuum from oriented to severely confused older adults. Demonstration and role-play will be used.

 

Legal Issues

This session is for the caregiver that has questions about such legal documents as advance directives, powers of attorney, probate or guardianship. Handouts and a question and answer period will follow the general overview.

What is the right choice for you and your loved one? Explore the different options, learn how to make the best choice and develop a plan for looking at facilities.

 

Organizing a Caregiver Support Network

For caregivers who would like to start a support network at work or in their faith community: Here are techniques and ideas from our Train the Trainer sessions designed for the layperson. 

 

Put Paper in “Its” Place!

Learn to organize important papers that accumulate from insurance companies, doctor’s charges, hospital charges, medication and/or treatment information—the list can go on for a long time.

  • Set up home files
  • Deal with unnecessary papers
  • Sorting and storing family records
  • Conquering “to do” lists

 

Safety at Home

In this session participants will learn an approach to safety that goes beyond the typical list of safe practices. Topics that will be addressed include:

  • Preparation needed for the home to decrease alls and injuries
  • Medication management for personal safety
  • Choosing assistive devices and repairs to increase safety and independence

 

Social Security and Medicare

Of interest to everyone with parents, a family member with certain disabling conditions or who is becoming older themselves!. This session covers the eligibility and benefits for Social Security Insurance, Social Security Disability Insurance and Medicare programs.

 

The Long Distance Caregiver or the Only Child/Single Parent

Caring for a family member who lives a long distance has unique problems. As does caring for a family member when you are a single parent or only child. It is a lonely and anxious road that requires extensive information and planning.

  • How can one manage it all from far away except with help from others, who are far away?
  • Where does the money come form?
  • What are the resources and who are people you need to know?
  • What do you need to have in place as a single Mom or Dad?
  • What are the legal issues, financial responsibilities, family issues and expectations?
